8 Indoor Activities to Do With Your Toddler When It’s Cold Outside
Yes, I know. St. George and Arizona do NOT get very cold even in the winter time; BUT there are some days that you don’t really feel like going outside and that’s okay! Here in sunny AZ we get sun most of the year, and even during February it can get up to 75 or 80 degrees Fahrenheit. However, come August, we get monsoon after monsoon.
The first week I moved to Arizona there was a massive monsoon that took out the giant tree in our backyard, along with our fence and another tree. Two days later, we had an even worse storm that cut off the power in our house for about 8 hours.
Yeeaahhh, I definitely wasn’t going to go outside any time soon. So, what do you do when you’re stuck inside with a small child that wants your constant attention? Here are a few ideas:
Arts and crafts: Get out some paper, crayons, markers, and glue and let your child's creativity flow. You can make simple crafts such as paper chains, finger painting, and paper plate masks.
Sensory play: Fill a plastic bin with rice, pasta, or beans and let your child explore the different textures. You can also add scoops and cups for them to practice pouring and measuring.
Build a fort: Use blankets, pillows, and furniture to create a cozy fort for your child to play in.
Storytime: Pick out some of your child's favorite books and read to them. You can also act out the stories together.
Dance party: Turn on some music and have a dance party with your child. You can make it more fun by adding scarves or streamers to wave around.
Cooking: Let your child help you in the kitchen by measuring ingredients or mixing batter. You can make simple recipes such as muffins or cookies. (If your power is out, you can make sandwiches or finger foods that don’t require an oven or stovetop.)
Puzzles: Introduce your child to puzzles by starting with simple, large-piece puzzles. You can work on them together and make it a fun challenge.
Board games: There are many board games available for young children, such as Candy Land and Chutes and Ladders. Playing board games can teach your child about taking turns and following rules.
Remember, the most important thing is to have fun and spend quality time with your child!
